North Dakota loses its “low crime” status

The FBI annual Uniformed Crime Reports show North Dakota falling behind the national average in overall crime rate for the first time in 2020. (Part 1 Crimes include Murder, Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Rape, Burglary, Larceny, Arson, and Motor Vehicle Theft).

North Dakota’s correctional philosophy incarceration rate hasn’t helped. Per the Vera Institute’s Winter 2021-22 Incarceration Report, North Dakota sits at # 38 in rate of incarceration at 218/100,000, well below the national avg of 303/100,000.

2021 FBI UCR data is expected later this year. Center of the American Experiment will review and share analysis of that data relevant to North Dakota.
