Comply Now, Complain Later

Harkening the historic “Smokey the Bear” and “Keep America Beautiful” public service ad campaigns of the 1970’s, the National Police Association has unveiled the “Comply Now, Complain Later” campaign.  See it here.

Police hope the campaign raises awareness to the 50,000 use of force incidents a year involving people who resist or become physically combative with the police — often resulting in unnecessary injury to citizens and the police.

The campaign seeks to influence the public to choose compliance in the present over resistance which never ends well for anyone. Arguably each high-profile police use of force case that has entered the national debate in recent years would have been avoided by adhering to this simple, yet profound, advice.

For beleaguered police, any effort is welcomed.
