American Experiment ND adds Kim Koppelman as Policy Fellow

American Experiment North Dakota announced today that Kim Koppelman, former Speaker of the North Dakota House of Representatives, will join the team as a Policy Fellow. Koppelman will use his knowledge and experience as a long-time member of the North Dakota legislature to research and write specifically about North Dakota issues. American Experiment ND is a public policy organization that produces original research and commentary on North Dakota’s economy, education, energy, health care and state and local governance. It also crafts and proposes creative solutions that emphasize free enterprise, limited government, personal responsibility and government accountability.

“Kim Koppelman is a leading voice for conservatives in North Dakota and we are thrilled to announce he is joining our team,” said Jennifer Benson, Executive Director of American Experiment North Dakota. “It’s an important step in our growth process to have North Dakotans writing and advocating about North Dakota policy.”

Kim Koppelman was first elected to the North Dakota House of Representatives in 1994 and served until 2022. During his tenure in the House Koppelman chaired the Judiciary Committee, the Constitutional Revision Committee and the Administrative Rules Committee. He was elected Speaker of the House in 2020. Koppelman also represented North Dakota as the National Chairman of the Council of State Governments, which is comprised of all three branches of government in all 50 states, and in leadership positions in the National Conference of State Legislatures and the American Legislative Exchange Council.

During his time in the North Dakota legislature, Koppelman sponsored landmark legislation and constitutional amendments to preserve important constitutional principles, protect individual rights, cut government red tape and regulation, improve criminal justice and government efficiency and protect our freedoms.

“I’m excited to join American Experiment ND as a policy fellow and look forward to helping take this important organization to the next level of policy analysis and advocacy in our state,” added Koppelman. “After serving in Bismark for 28 years, I’m looking forward to putting that experience to work for American Experiment.”

Koppelman currently serves on the Boards of Next Gen-The National Institute for Civil Discourse and the Phoenix Correspondence Commission and American Experiment, ND and chairs the Valley Christian Leadership Association. He has also been active in his local community and church, serving for many years as an elder and church chairman. He has been a frequent guest on radio and television programs, has been a guest lecturer in colleges and universities and has spoken before government, business, faith-based and general audiences throughout the nation.

Kim is a former newspaper editor and has served as president and CEO of Koppelman & Associates, LLC, an award-winning advertising, marketing and public relations agency he founded, for decades. He and his wife, Torey, are the parents of three children and 10 grandchildren and reside in West Fargo, North Dakota.
